In our spark box, there is a machine that watches the wave count of the cam sensor. Once this phases out of count, or wave lengths, it goes to a trigger counting machine [in the spark unit is like generic communication between cam to crank tones], where the machine sends the new signal to the ECU; the ECU sends a retard map to slow the count back to the correct read.
That is why you hear about a small window of tune by using the tone wheel adjuster or moving the slot one way [or the other]. So, you more or less can grind the one side so it moves one way to the more advanced side. But you leave the other U slot alone. This way, you just line the U that is not slotted back to the stock position.
The trick is to move the pickup to the right as the crank spins clockwise [you sitting on the bike is now look at the right side of the crank] is see how it would fire off sooner you moving the pickup to the right as piston is lower so the advance fires the flame off sooner is gonna fire backwards you make it too advanced is the reason the cam knows the direction is to halt it from firing backwards. Say, you take the slot and it has the X to move sideways, but you will have to grind the Y factor is the indent that fits snug to the engine case thread hole. Therefore to move the stationary advance over to perform the movement of Z, you will have to grind down just half [of both] the indented recess. They use this to keep the correct air gap to the tone wheel off the crank.
So, your finished product should have one slot open, the other close with indent shave and the x-y-z ground to it so all moves as one sliding pickup. And for the back of the pick-up unit, you would have both the staked indents ground to a half circle or say it looks like a "D" > Where you ground half the indents away so you can slide the pick-up just that half saved so it moves back to the stock position. Filed by hand, you could run it as close as 3/4 to a touch more than 7/8% of the indent is removed so it stops so far.
Because, by slotting, you might butt your slide of the pickup right up against that counting machine where it would stay out of the retard window is send the front end nose diving.
